Aortic dissection is a fatal cardiovascular condition without timely diagnosis, and is missed in more than 50% of cases.
In fact, its the third most common misdiagnosis in Emergency Departments worldwide and kills more than 3 people per day in ANZ.
Acute and fast diagnosis of aortic disease poses a challenge, yet rapid identification is crucial to reduce patient morbidity and mortality.
Alarmingly, a third of patients with aortic dissection are being actively treated for the wrong diagnosis.
A CT scan is essential for a definitive diagnosis, as chest X-ray, ECG, echocardiogram (heart ultrasound) and blood tests cannot definitvely rule out risk of or presence of aortic dissection. It is vital to enhance aortic awareness and understanding of the condition to improve outcomes for patients.
THNK Aorta aims to raise awareness about this critical condition across Australia and New Zealand.
